Vichy Delivers an Unforgettable 2024 Europe Triathlon Championships

By media@europe.triathlon.org | 25 Sep, 2024

The 2024 Europe Triathlon Championships in Vichy have come to a thrilling conclusion, with unforgettable performances, inspiring moments, and a celebration of 40 incredible years of European triathlon! Athletes, fans, and volunteers alike gathered to witness an extraordinary weekend of racing, celebration, and camaraderie, marking this event as one of the most exciting in the history of Europe Triathlon.

Elite Races: Champions Crowned in Vichy

The elite races delivered dramatic moments that will be remembered for years. In the Elite Women’s race, France’s Leonie Periault initially took control with a strong swim, leading into the first transition. However, an unfortunate penalty in T1 slowed her down, allowing Great Britain’s Vicky Holland to catch up. Holland stayed strong throughout the race, and her well-timed push in the final moments earned her the title with a time of 1:52:36, narrowly edging Periault, who finished just behind her at 1:52:45. Italy’s Alice Betto came in third, completing the podium in 1:53:07 after a consistent performance across all segments.

In the men’s competition, Hungary’s Csongor Lehmann claimed victory with a time of 1:40:18, but the race was far from decided until the last few metres. The run between the top three—Lehmann, France’s Yanis Seguin, and Norway’s Casper Stornes—was an intense battle. The trio exchanged leads throughout the run, with Great Britain’s Hugo Milner also pushing hard with an incredible run time of 28:15, the fastest of the day. Lehmann ultimately pulled ahead in the final stretch to take the win, just four seconds ahead of Seguin (1:40:22), who claimed second, and Stornes (1:40:28), who took third. Milner’s impressive performance earned him fourth place, just outside the podium, but his run was one of the standout moments of the race.

Both races were broadcast live on Europe Triathlon’s YouTube channel and French National television, ensuring that fans across Europe could follow every moment of the action.

Para Triathlon: Inspirational Athletes Shine

Sunday’s Para Triathlon races were filled with inspiration and emotion. France’s Alexis Hanquinquant, a Paralympic gold medalist, dominated the PTS4 men’s race, taking first place with a time of 55:45. His experience as a Paralympic champion was evident as he powered through the course, showcasing his strength and determination. Equally remarkable was Spain’s Susana Rodriguez, a Paralympic champion and para legend, who won her race in a time of 1:04:43. Rodriguez, a renowned athlete, continues to inspire with her phenomenal performances across multiple para-sport events, including this championship. Both Hanquinquant and Rodriguez showed the immense talent and heart that makes para-triathlon one of the most inspiring aspects of the sport.

Vichy provided a world-class stage for all para athletes, and their performances left an indelible mark on everyone present, highlighting the power of sport to inspire and unite.

On Saturday, the Sprint distance races saw athletes racing under clear skies, but Sunday presented a new challenge for the Standard distance competitors. Despite the rain, the Age Group athletes pushed through the challenging conditions and conquered the race course with determination and resilience. Their inspiring and incredible performances served as a testament to the enduring spirit of triathlon.
