Pamplona Shines as European Triathlon Capital During Historic Championship Weekend
Pamplona delivered on every promise this weekend, hosting an unforgettable 2025 Europe Triathlon Multisport Championships from 15–17 May. Over 1,400 athletes from 23 nations converged in the heart of Navarra for three continental titles—Aquathlon, Middle Distance Triathlon, and Aquabike—bringing not only high-level racing but also a powerful sense of community, inclusion, and environmental responsibility.
A Powerful Start with Aquathlon
The championships kicked off Thursday with the European Aquathlon Championships, where more than 350 athletes tackled a 1,000-meter swim in the clear waters of the Alloz Reservoir followed by a 5K run through the scenic Aritzaleku countryside. The race offered an explosive start to the weekend, with elite and U23 athletes showing impressive speed and resilience.
Slovakia’s Zuzana Michalickova stormed to the women’s elite title with a nail-biting finish, narrowly edging out Hungary’s Jázmin Kropkó. In the men’s race, Spain’s Kevin Tarek Viñuela led from the water and never looked back, claiming gold ahead of Great Britain’s Christopher Perham. Spain’s Julen Andueza added flair with a U23 gold and elite bronze, while Italy, Slovenia, and other nations also saw strong performances across categories, proving the deep talent pool across Europe.
Age group and paratriathlon competitors added to the day’s celebration, showing the inclusive spirit of multisport and setting the tone for the days to come.
Middle Distance Glory and Aquabike Excellence
Saturday’s spotlight event—the European Middle Distance Triathlon Championships—offered a fitting crescendo to the week. Athletes began with a challenging 1.9 km swim in Alloz, transitioned into a hilly 85 km ride through the Tierra Estella region, and finished with a 19.5 km run weaving through Pamplona’s historic core, ending in the iconic Plaza del Castillo.
Poland’s Marta Lagownic delivered a breakout performance in the elite women’s race, using a strong run to overtake early leaders and secure the European crown. Italy’s Sara Sandrini earned silver after a gritty performance, while Spain’s Maria Varo claimed bronze in front of an electrified home crowd.
In the elite men’s race, Catalonia’s Guillem Montiel dominated from the bike onward, taking the title with confidence. Serbia’s Ognjen Stojanovic impressed with a silver medal finish, while Fernando Zorrilla (ESP) completed the podium after an incredible late surge in the run.
Meanwhile, the European Aquabike Championships saw athletes push hard across swim and bike segments before finishing in Antoniutti Park. With elite and age-group categories showcasing endurance and strategy, the event highlighted the depth of talent across Europe.
Unity, Atmosphere, and Sustainability at the Core
While the results were a testament to Europe’s athletic strength, what stood out most was the atmosphere: packed streets, cheering fans, and a palpable sense of unity. From juniors to veterans, from first-timers to champions, the diversity and camaraderie of the European triathlon community was on full display.
Sustainability also took center stage. From reusable bottles to eco-friendly aid stations, every detail was designed to reduce environmental impact. Europe Triathlon and the local organizers set a high bar for future events by embedding responsibility into the race culture.
Pamplona Leaves a Lasting Legacy
As the sun sets on Pamplona’s historic triathlon weekend, the impact goes far beyond medals. The event celebrated 10 years of the Half Triathlon Pamplona Iruña, but more importantly, it marked a decade of growth for European multisport—bringing nations together, inspiring the next generation, and proving once again that triathlon is a sport of resilience, unity, and heart.
A heartfelt thank you to FETRI, the local organizing committee, all volunteers, and everyone involved behind the scenes. This Championships would not have been possible without your dedication, passion, and hard work.
We congratulate all athletes and supporters for making this a Championship to remember!
