European Athletes Set for a Thrilling Showdown at Challenge Almere-Amsterdam 2024
On September 14, the European Championship Long Distance at Challenge Almere-Amsterdam will see some of the continent’s top triathletes battle for the coveted title over 3.8 kilometres of swimming, 180 kilometres of cycling, and 42.2 kilometres of running. European athletes in both the men’s and women’s races are preparing for what promises to be a thrilling contest on one of the world’s fastest triathlon courses.
In the men’s race, Germany’s Florian Angert leads the charge. Making his debut at Almere, Angert is laser-focused on claiming the European title. His fellow countryman, Lukasz Wojt, known for his incredible swimming speed, is also in the mix, aiming to stay ahead during the bike and run legs.
Jesper Svensson of Sweden, already familiar with the Almere course, poses a major threat. His second-place finish in the 2021 World Championship Long Distance, with a blistering time of 7:39:25, makes him one of the favourites for the European crown. Dutch hopes rest on Milan Brons and Pim van Diemen, both of whom are coming off strong performances and will be eager to shine on home soil.
In the women’s race, the competition is equally fierce. Marlene de Boer, representing the Netherlands, is in excellent form, having recently won two international races in Copenhagen and Poznan. With last year’s defending champion Els Visser absent, de Boer has her sights set on claiming the European title in front of her home crowd.
Danish star Michelle Vesterby, a seasoned competitor, will also be racing for the last time as a professional athlete. Vesterby’s history with Challenge Almere-Amsterdam and her determination to finish her career with a victory make her a formidable opponent.
Germany’s Lina Kristin-Schink, affectionately known as ‘Miss Almere’ for her frequent participation in the race, will once again be at the start line, while South African Magda Nieuwoudt, one of last year’s most successful triathletes within the Challenge Family circuit, brings her wealth of experience to the European Championship race.
While the elite athletes battle for the European title, hundreds of Age Group competitors will also take to the course, proudly representing their countries in pursuit of European medals. These Age Group athletes, coming from across Europe, will compete alongside the elites, adding to the unique atmosphere of Challenge Almere-Amsterdam.
For Age Groupers, this is more than just a race—it’s a chance to showcase their dedication and passion, as they balance work, family, and training to compete at the highest level. Racing for national pride and the opportunity to stand on the European podium, these athletes bring their own stories of determination and triumph.
With both elite and Age Group athletes coming together, the European Championship Long Distance at Challenge Almere-Amsterdam promises to deliver unforgettable performances and fierce competition. From the men’s and women’s elite battles to the national pride on display in the Age Group races, this year’s event is set to be a true celebration of European triathlon excellence.
