Austrian Triathlon Federation ACEP Accredited

The Austrian Triathlon Federation has become the 12th National Federation globally, and the ninth in Europe, to have its coach education programme recognised through World Triathlon's Accredited Coach Education Programme (ACEP).  ACEP is World Triathlon's framework for National Federation coach education programmes. It provides recognition for those who meet internationally recognised standards in curriculum design, coaching learning, assessment, delivery, and ongoing programme evaluation. The accreditation process supports National Federations in strengthening their coach development systems while maintaining the flexibility to reflect their own national coach education focus.  Following a thorough review process, Austria Triathlon demonstrated that its coach education programme meets the required ACEP standards, joining a growing global network of National Federations committed to coach education excellence.

A Structured Pathway for Coach Development

In the ACEP review process, Triathlon Austria outlined its commitment to delivering a coach education pathway that aligns with international best practice while also meeting the needs of coaches working within the Austrian triathlon community. It reflects a strong focus on evidence-based learning, practical coaching skills, and accessible education that supports coach development at every stage.  A key strength of Triathlon Austria's education system is its coaching pathway, with five levels of education that offer coaches progressive opportunities to develop their knowledge, experience, and expertise as they advance in their coaching careers.

The pathway begins with the Übungsleiter qualification, an entry-level course designed for coaches working primarily with children and regional clubs. Open to anyone interested in becoming a coach, the course provides an accessible introduction to coaching without formal entry requirements.  Coaches can then progress to the Instruktor qualification, aimed at coaches working within regional clubs and private coaching environments. Completion of the Übungsleiter course is expected, with candidates selected based on their commitment and progress. Due to strong demand, these courses are frequently oversubscribed.  The pathway continues through the Trainergrundkurs, Spezialtrainer, and Diplomtrainer qualifications, each preparing coaches to work with elite and Under 23 athletes. Progression through these advanced levels requires successful completion of the previous qualification, creating a thorough development framework that supports coaches' education from grassroots participation through to high-performance coaching.  This approach ensures coaches build the technical, practical and leadership skills required at each stage of an athlete's development while maintaining consistent educational standards across the Austrian coaching system.

World Triathlon congratulates Triathlon Austria on this significant achievement in joining the ACEP family.  The programme has been led by Oliver Laaber, whose vision, leadership, and commitment has helped establish a coach education pathway that meets international standards while, very importantly,  also addressing the needs of the Austrian triathlon community.

As the ACEP network grows, each accredited NF programme strengthens the global coaching landscape by promoting consistent standards, encouraging the exchange of best practice, and the development of well educated triathlon coaches across the world.
