Fuller and Ortfeld Strike Gold in Tenerife

Annie Fuller continued her impressive run of form in Europe, securing back-to-back Europe Triathlon Cup victories with another gold medal in Tenerife this weekend.

With more than 20 athletes coming into T2 together following the bike leg, the women’s race was set to be decided on the run. Having already demonstrated her running strength earlier in the season, Fuller once again delivered when it mattered most.

The American gradually broke away from French athlete Elena Polaert, eventually crossing the finish line eight seconds clear to claim her third Europe Triathlon Cup gold medal.

Polaert held off a late charge from Faith Duncan to secure silver. Duncan matched Fuller over the five-kilometre run, but her impressive effort came just too late to challenge Polaert for second place. She nevertheless secured a well-earned bronze medal in Tenerife.

Elite Men

The elite men’s race followed a similar pattern, with a large group remaining together on the bike to set up a decisive final leg.

Despite exiting the water in 57th position, Germany’s Jaspar Ortfeld produced the fastest T1 of the day, helping him move into a stronger position as the athletes tackled the city streets on the bike. By the time he reached T2, Ortfeld had climbed to 17th, although a podium finish still looked a challenging prospect.

A sixth-fastest T2 proved crucial, allowing him to leave transition in seventh position and immediately move towards the front of the run group. The fast course played to the German’s strengths, and he delivered a superb performance over the final leg, recording a joint-fastest run split of 13:12 to take the victory.

Vicente Hernandez was hot on Ortfeld’s heels, matching the German’s run time. However, the Spaniard’s slower transition proved costly, leaving him unable to close the gap to the eventual winner.

Hernandez still secured a place on the podium, finishing alongside compatriot Jarno Pousada Troitiño. After being among the last athletes to exit the water, Troitiño produced an impressive recovery through the field to claim bronze.

For Ortfeld, the victory marks his first medal since Olsztyn, where he also claimed gold, putting him in a strong position in the European rankings.

Hernandez, meanwhile, celebrated his first medal of the year, while Troitiño added another podium finish to an already successful season. His bronze in Tenerife follows medals in Banyoles and Yasmine Hammamet earlier this year, while also matching his third-place finish at the same race last season.
