Change of format could provide drama in Torremolinos

24 Apr, 2026 06:09 AM2 min read

Torremolinos will host another edition of the European Triathlon Cup on Saturday 25th April, featuring Elite and Junior competitions.

Due to water quality concerns, Torremolinos City Council announced on Thursday 23 April a ban on swimming at Los Álamos Beach. As a result, the event will be held in a duathlon format, while retaining the same number of ranking points.

With this change in format it's likely to create some new opporunities for the athletes to possibly create an upset in Spain. With a full start list in the men's elite race the field is competitive with lots of host nation talent looking to lineup on the start line.

Athletes from 31 countries are set to compete, with representation extending beyond Europe to include competitors from nations such as the United States, Mexico, Chile, and Peru.

Race day

The competition will take place along the Torremolinos seafront, with a full schedule running from 1:15 p.m., beginning with the Junior women’s race, through to 7:15 p.m., when the Elite men’s event concludes the program.

The Elite races will feature a mix of established and emerging athletes from across Europe and beyond. Notable entrants include Olympic-level competitors and recent European Cup performers, alongside a range of athletes representing France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Portugal, and other nations.

The women’s field is similarly competitive, with experienced international athletes joined by rising talents and returning Olympians, contributing to a strong and diverse lineup.

Strong Interest in Junior Races

The Junior competitions have also attracted high participation, reinforcing Torremolinos’ role as an important venue in the European development pathway.

Recent podium finishers from earlier European Cup events and national-level medalists are among those entered, ensuring competitive fields in both the men’s and women’s races.
