Two of Ukraine’s most decorated athletes added a home European Cup victory to their list of achievements with victory at the ETU Sprint European Cup in Dnepropetrovsk.
For Yuliya Yelistratova and Yegor Martynenko, winners of eight European Cups between them and both previously European Points List winners, this is one of their proudest moments as they claimed victory on home soil in the first ever European race in Ukraine.
It was a day of celebration for the host country and this International race didn’t disappoint. The Ukrainian athletes didn’t have it all their own way and Yelistratova and Martynenko had to work hard for their gold medal.
In the Elite Women’s race, Yelistratova finished ahead of Mateja Simic (SLO) and Oleksandra Stepanenko (UKR). Simic paid tribute to the race organisers: “It was a really exciting experience to race here in Ukraine. It's my first time here and I really enjoyed the place, the people and the atmosphere,” she said.
“I know that it's not easy moment for Ukrainian people, that's why, for me, it was really important to be here. I found really friendly and kind people and a really good organisation. So really thanks to Ukrainian people, to the organisers, to Ukrainian Federation and to ETU. I will remember this experience for all of my life and that's the beauty of sport.”
In the Elite Men’s race it was a clean sweep for Ukraine as Martynenko triumphed over Sergiy Kokhan and Danylo Sapunov. It was Kokhan’s first European Cup podium.
The ETU High Performance Development team performed admirably and the experience of racing at this level will stand them in good stead. Balan Andrea (ROU), Antonela Manac (ROU) and Ipek Oztosun finished 17th, 20th and 21st respectively in the Elite Women’s race. Milan Tomin (SRB), Aliaksandr Dakhno (BLR) and Ali Atlan (TUR) were 19th, 23rd and 24th in the Elite Men’s race.
