Welcome Europe Junior Triathlon Cup Wels!

By laura@europe.triathlon.org | 25 Jun, 2021

This year, for the first time, Wels joins the ranks of top-class international junior competitions after Vienna and Kitzbühel with a Junior European Cup. Dr Andreas Rabl Mayor of Wels, says “We are very proud that Europe‘s triathlon elite is coming to our city. The organisation at this special time will certainly be a challenge, but we are confident and can draw on many years of experience in hosting major sporting events. Sport with its social component is an essential building block of our society. We are proud to have been awarded the Junior European Cup by the European Triathlon Federation. This shows once again that Wels not only offers the right setting for mass sports, but also for top-class sports. Numerous sporting events have already taken place in Wels, from the Wels Half Marathon to the Cycling Tour of Austria and the inner-city cycling criterium to the Wels Teamplayer Cross Run or the Business Run. Even the tennis Davis Cup has already been held in Wels. Just as top athletes become ambassadors for their clubs, sporting events are figureheads for the host city. With the Junior European Cup, we have once again gained a new figurehead for our city. Congratulations!
I would like to thank all the organisers, sponsors, clubs and volunteers who helped with their commitment to make this event unforgettable and to continue Wels‘ good reputation as a sports city. I keep my fingers crossed for all athletes on their way into the future of top-class sport and wish them every success. Toi, toi, toi!”

The race start is on the 300m² SilberHolz Floating dock in the Traun and it is a straight swim to transition which reaches transition after 750 m. Water average temperature is expected to be about 19 degrees. The bike course in the style of a cycling criterium is a flat 5 laps of 4K in the city center. And the run course is a 3 laps of 1,66k around Wels. In addition to the jnuior races, there will also be an „Open Race“ of the „starlim City Triathlon Austria Wels“ for all beginners and amateurs.
In the junior men home athlete Jan Bader back from a 4th place at European Championships in Kitzbühel is surely to do his best for a podium step. The same for the Spanish Esteban Basanta European Aquathlon Champion and Mixed Relay bronze together with Juan Gonzalez and Igor Bellido 2nd in FinalB Kitzbühel and Joan Reixach silver in European Aquathlon Championship.
In the junior women Barbara De Koning is searching another good opportunity for a podium and Spanish contenders María Casals European Aquathlon Champion in Walchsee, Natalia Castro bronze  Mixed Relay medal in Kitzbühel, Helena Moragas  bronze European Aquathlon medal in Walchsee and Elsa Pena are to fight her back. We are expecting a great battle!
