Racing in Turkey?

By Paul Groves | 08 Jul, 2016

We have over the years seen some great races in Turkey.

The surge in interest in triathlon has been particularly strong in Turkey and the Turkish Triathlon Federation (Türkiye Triatlon Federasyonu) , under the command of their President, Hamdi Güneş has grown the sport at both Elite and Age Group levels and we can see many younger athletes now coming onto the start lists.

We have also seen an escalation in terrorist incidents, not only in Turkey but in many countries around the world and sadly, nowhere is as safe as it was before.

The simple thing to do would be to shut down every sporting event and every public gathering in every country. At least that would reduce the risk but that would of course play into the hands of the extremists. Instead we could assess the risk and decide ourselves whether we should stay at home or instead head to the events that are scheduled and where we can enjoy the great hospitality of the Turkish people, where we can win points and prize-money, or even, simply, where we can meet with friends who race the same as us – swim / bike and run.

How do we assess risk?

Well, the British Government issues reliable travel advice, which is regularly updated and which relies upon highly trustworthy sources based in Turkey and in neighbouring countries.

The current advice suggests that only in certain areas bordering Syria and Iraq should be avoided but that the usual common-sense should be applied elsewhere. The 2016 Eğirdir ETU Triathlon European Cup and the 2016 Alanya ETU Triathlon Junior European Cup, with the 2016 Alanya ETU Triathlon European Cup (Rankings Final) are both in locations that are far away from the Eastern borders.

So, hopefully this short notice will help you make your minds up and don’t forget, the Turkish Triathlon Federation welcomes you!
