German juniors win European gold in Mixed Team Relay in Kitzbuhel

By David Peddie | 22 Jun, 2014

A strong German junior team, consisting of Lena MeiBner, Valentin Wernz, Laura Lindemann and Lasse Lührs, has secured the European title in the Junior Mixed Team Relay competition. Raphael Montoya tried to close a one minute gap for France but came 17 seconds short to win his second gold medal of the weekend.

It was Vilde Tengesdal who was the fastest swimmer for Norway, closely followed by 11 nations.  Switzerland unfortunately had to drop out after mechanical bike problems for Estelle Perriard. In the run Audrey Merle opened up a first gap for France, but Germany and Russia joined France on the bike after the first transition.

At the halfway point of the race France’s Max Hueber-Moosbrugger forced a 12 second lead to Germany’s Valentin Wernz. It was European Champion Laura Lindemann who played a crucial role, battling it out with vice champion Cassandre Beaugrand for France and creating a gap of over 1 minute.

In the battle for bronze Team GB saw Sophie Coldwell and Luke Penney doing a great job in holding off Russia. Therese Feuersinger, Philip Horwarth, Sara Skardelly and Lukas Pertl delighted the home crowd with Austria’s 5th place.
