ETU Rankings and the Alanya Rankings Final

By Paul Groves | 10 Aug, 2016

The season is well underway and we have seen some exciting races so far this year. Whilst 31 male and 31 female athletes (out of a total of 56 in each category) from Europe will be racing in Rio, making up easily the largest number from any region, many who have trained alongside them will be watching the two races and cheering on their training partners.

As we have already communicated, the ETU Executive Board has agreed to increase the prize-money this year for the top-ranking athletes and to reward those who regularly race and support the hard work put in by race organisers.

The Elite athletes will get a chance to win more money than ever before and for the Juniors the fund has increased as well, which means the best three federations will get a bumper pay-out at the end of the season.

The ETU Rankings have been regularly updated by Enrique Quesada and his team in Madrid.

As things stand Great Britain’s Lucy Hall and Jessica Learmonth are in the top three with four events counting.

Between them, in second place, behind Hall is Russia’s Valentina Zapatrina who has also raced in four counting events.

Behind them and racing this weekend, is the multi-winner from Ukraine, Yuliya Yelistratova who, if she races the available events between now and the final in Alanya, could really upset the top three positions.

For the men the race is well and truly open and is again led by a British athlete, Grant Sheldon.

Behind him comes Tom Richard from France and Francesc Godoy from Spain.

Those behind in the top ten all have a chance to get to the top three and we will of course be updating you after each of the ETU Triathlon European Cup events.

The Juniors will also be racing in Alanya and showing dominance across the board, it is once more the British athletes who are leading. They have the edge on Hungary and France.

With just over nine weeks before the Alanya event we have of course been watching the news unfold in Turkey and wondering whether we should go or not. Ultimately it is a personal decision and it would not be up to ETU to declare that you should or should not travel to any event. For this reason there have been detailed discussions and communications between ETU Head-Quarters and the Turkish Triathlon Federation.

Last year was the 25th edition of this great event. A weekend of sporting fun that finishes with the annual 5k swim.

So, this year ... 26 years old and Hamdi GÜNEŞ, President of the Turkish Triathlon Federation has provided the following two letters that we invite you to read. As one of the longest-running and most successful races in Europe, taking place in a resort that can offer low-cost accommodation and food, top-quality seas for the swim, fully closed roads for the bike and run and one of the best closing ceremonies that you could possibly hope for, we are looking forwards to the trip there in October and the chance to see our athletes going for gold and the big pay-out.
