Lisbon comes alive with the Lycra invasion

By Paul Groves | 26 May, 2016

This morning saw a massive police closure of roads in downtown Lisbon as the athletes “en masse” took to the roads for the bike familiarisation. From all over Europe they have come to race the Sprint and Standard distance events. As they waited for the start signal the excitement was electric.

Old friends met and new friends were made.

Under the watchful eyes of their team managers, they waited for the police to confirm that they could set off and then, with Jean-Marc Aebischer leading them – the roads filled.

Lisbon is triathlon central this weekend and the Portuguese Federation have opened their arms to welcome almost 2,000 athletes.  All over the city there are national uniforms to be seen. As the athletes rest and prepare, it is time for the National Federation Presidents and Secretaries General to get down to the hard work of reviewing the past and planning for the future.

36 National Federations and a large number of guests from ITU attended the Congress. A great attendance of over 90 people filled the congress hall to hear the latest news from the ETU Executive Board.

A warm welcome was given to all by Fernando Henriques Feijão, the Portuguese Federation president.

Then we heard from Marisol Casado, ITU President. She gave a really positive account of the progress made by ITU and the plans for the future. She was full of praise for the way that our sport is being run in Europe. With European athletes making up the lion’s share of major events and with ETU athletes taking over 30 places in both the women’s and men’s Olympic start lists, it is a clear signal that ETU is getting it right. In this, an election year, we heard just how successful the continuing development of our sport has been under her leadership.

ETU President, Renato Bertrandi thanked both Marisol and Fernando, welcomed everyone to the Congress and then the hard work started. It really is satisfying to see so many federations meeting, discussing, developing and planning for the future.

The future looks good. The future is ETU!
