Back in the “good old days”, Eurosport covered the many races around the circuit. One stand-out event was in 1993, in Bordeaux. A stellar line-up of athletes raced in the velodrome there. It was fast and furious and immensely exciting to watch.

With such success, it was not surprising that a follow-up event took place that was even bigger. Once again it was the Fédération Française de Triathlon who dynamically took this format forwards and Paris Bercy was the venue. Click this link to see Jacques Laparade tell us about the concept.

Juan Antonio Saramanche was there to see the racing and announced that perhaps we might see triathlon at the 2000 Summer Games. With as big a line up as in 1993, we hear from Simon Lessing, Rob Barel (both speaking pretty good French) and from Miles Stewart and Jérôme Sanson.

When we look at it now, we can see how there are many areas we can improve on that original delivery.

ITU has rules and guidance for such events, contained at 14.1. of the Competition Rules
Indoor Triathlon =

  • a.) An Indoor Triathlon  consists  of  a  triathlon,  which  takes  place  in  a  closed space such as a sports pavilion, which has a swimming pool, a cycling track and a running track.”

Back then the race was described as “beyond epic” even though it was a super-sprint-type event. Epic it certainly was and the crowds loved it. Cheers rang out around the arena from the very start and the camera angles were brilliant.

We have wonderful news.
