Spring has arrived officially in Europe and with the winter months behind us (hopefully) we can all look forwards to the great races on the ETU Calendar. With a packed schedule of Cups and Championships, let us not forget that ETU Federations send hundreds of athletes each year to race at the World Championships.
Chicago, well-known as “The Windy City” is a long, long way from the venue for this year’s World Championships.
Check out Cozumel. Where ??
Up the coast from Quintana Roo, east of Yucatan and looking out towards the Cayman Islands and Cuba. This Caribbean destination looks delightful. Click the picture to see the video !
Mauricio Zavala is the man who presented an enticing view of the event at the Paris Presidents’ Conference. Outside it was cold – everyone watched and everyone enjoyed the thought of racing in warm weather.
“The Mayan Riviera and Cozumel have more European that American tourists every year and I hope that many European Triathletes will decide to embrace this experience and visit the land where the ancient and the modern combine to offer the most marvellous and exotic destination in the Mexican Caribbean, along with the very best World Championships we can offer!”
A total of 34 European Federations saw what was on offer and hopefully by now your plans as Age Group athletes are on getting that qualification for the September event.
It will also be a destination that many Technical Officials will hope to work at. As an added incentive, a challenge has been set between our three international technical officials below (from left to right: Roberto Menescal (BRA), Thanos Nikopoulos (GRE), Felix Molina (MEX)). The challenge is that they have to participate as athletes in the 2016 Cozumel AG Sprint World Championship and finish the race. The one that will not do so, has to grow a moustache for 6 months following the event. What do you think will happen in the end?
If you are considering applying as an SFTO, then the LOC has a special offer for you. The Mexican Triathlon Federation and the LOC of the 2016 ITU World Triathlon Grand Final Cozumel are offering accommodation and full board to 20 self-funded technical officials. SFTOs will share accommodation in twin rooms. Officials that wish to share accommodation with their family member or friend who is not selected as SFTO, are not eligible for this offer.
Officials should be available to officiate from Tuesday 13th September to Sunday 18th September (Accommodation will be provided from Monday 12th to Monday 19th). Please note that there will be only 20 SFTOs spots available for this event. Application should be done in line with published guidelines. Application deadline: 15th April 2016.
