The Middle Distance European Championship at Challenge Kaiserwinkl-Walchsee is held in one of the most scenic places in the Austrian Tyrol. The venue has spectacular mountain views and crystal clear lake. The resort town of Walchsee is set on the shores of the lake at the foot of the imposing Kaiser mountain range close to the German and Italian borders. The area is not only famous for its scenery, but also for the warm-hearted and welcoming locals. No wonder, that in the last few years Challenge athletes are not only guests, but also have become friends of the place.
Based on many years of cooperation with Triathlon Europe (ETU) and Challenge Family GmbH, the first edition of the European Middle Distance Triathlon Championships was held in Austria for the first time in 2016. The Multisport European Championships are going to be held in Austria for the second time after 2019.

The European Middle Distance Championship, in 2019 was won by Andrey Bryukhankov (RUS) and Katrina Rye (GBR) in Targu Mures. This year it will take place in the beautiful Austrian setting through breath-taking mountainous scenery. It’s no coincidence that much can be expected from men like Wild, Funk, Steger and Molinari, all athletes with both explosive and endurance powers.
However all eyes will be in the women race with the challenge between the German 2019 Ironman World Champion Anne Haug and Olympic gold at London and silver at Rio Swiss athlete Nicola Spirig. Both ladies have already seen success this season Spirig just back from European Sprint Championship and Haug won Challenge St Pölten. It is expected a strong fight between the two athletes are to push their own limits in their battle to call themselves Europe’s best athlete over the Middle Distance. The two athletes know already each other from World Triathlon events and probably have studied the race aspects so well that we will many fighting especially during the run course. Marta Bernardi (ITA), Line Bonde (DEN), Gabriela Zelinka (HUN), Janien Lubben (NED) and Spaniard Perez Sala  will do everything to end up on the podium in Walchsee. The swim is a one-lap of 1.9km, the water is so clear you can drink it.
The 90km bike course is 2 laps of 45km, through the beautiful region of Kaiserwinkl with spectacular mountain views. The 90km bike covers 1,100 m of altitude difference.

Athletes will be relieved by the quite flat run course of four laps run course heading around the lake promenade, past farmhouses with their colourful window boxes and through alpine meadows, with a stunning view of the Kaiser Massif and Lake Walchsee. The finish line is situated in the heart of Walchsee, next to the transition area with beautiful view on the lake and the Kaiser Massif.

The European Championship is due to start on Sunday 27 June at 8:30 am (CEST). You can follow through Live tracking and Live at the links below.
