European Sports Championships - plan ahead for 2018

By Paul Groves | 25 Nov, 2015

At the Presidents’ Assembly in Loughborough in January of this year the heads of the European Triathlon National Federations were treated to a vision that has now become a reality. Plans are now well established for the 2018 European Sports Championships and with the sporting events spread over two great sporting cities, all eyes will be focused on Berlin and Glasgow between 1-12 August.

Athletics will be hosted by Berlin, where the 2018 European Athletics Championships will take place between 7th and 12th August.

Triathlon, swimming, cycling, rowing, gymnastics and golf will be hosted by Glasgow, where we saw such a great welcome to the athletes from all over the Commonwealth in 2014. Glasgow was truly placed on the map and the hospitality of the Scots meant that everyone had a great time there.

ETU President, Renato Bertrandi, “The notion of a sporting festival is a very exciting one. If we look at the atmosphere that is created at the Olympics, at the European Games and the Commonwealth Games, where our athletes race and show the rest of the world how exciting our sport can be, then I think this is a great way to showcase triathlon. The TV rights that are proposed for the European Sports Championships suggest that a massive audience will have the benefit of the TV companies using their best technology. With the spectacular nature of our sport I can see triathlon being one of the most popular of the events on the schedule. Glasgow has already shown the world that it can not only welcome athletes from all over the world but also that it can put on a very good event. 2018 will be an exciting year.”
