Bobby Behan 11th in ITU Seorak International Triathlon, South Korea

Date: 26-6-2005
Race Report: ITU Seorak International Triathlon, South Korea
Result: 11th
Filed by: Bobby Behan

This was my first International Race since March 2001 and my first triatlon
since September 2004. On the start line were some top names including 3 of
Japan’s leading athletes and Jan Rehula, Sydney 2000 Olympic Bronze Medalist.

As expected although my swimming is improving, a full winter is required to
attain an International Level swim segment. I lost 2 min 20secs on the opening
1500m (2 lap) non wetsuit swim. The very long run to transition almost killed
me!

Out onto the 40km (5 lap bike) and I soon managed to get into a pack / group.
Unfortunately, the guys had no idea how to ride as a group. It was a disaster.
None of them spoke English either, which made life even more frustrating! I was
feeling really bad and although I did most of the work in the pack it was well
below even an average day for me on the bike.

I also really struggled on the run. At this stage the humidity levels were high!
I finished the bike in 10th, moved up to 9th on the run but was passed twice to
finish 11th.

In summary, my performace was way below an average day for me. Looking back I
think a week in bed with the flu and then jumping onto a long haul flight with
a 8 hour time zone difference and going from the middle of winter to the middle
of an Asian summer all took their toll on me.

This year for me is all about experience and these races are great for that. I
am as positive as ever and I am looking forward to my next race. I am in Seoul
right now and travel from here to China for my next race.
