Look who’s racing in Lisbon?

By Paul Groves | 06 Oct, 2018

With the advance notification of Teams giving us an indication of who might be racing, we had to wait until late last night for the final team composition to be made public.

With the Athletes’ Briefing comes the deadline for the submission of names for each team and today, there is a further deadline before the race start for any last-minute changes in the order.

Wow – we have some top names racing today.

Katie Zafares, ranked #1 in the world. João Silva, who will be racing today on just two hours’ sleep following the birth of their daughter, Ema. ETU extends the very best of wishes to Mum and Dad. The only man ever to claim both Sprint and Standard titles in one year, João Pereira.

Cassandre Beaugrand. The fastest runner on the circuit, winner in Hamburg and key player in the French victories in the Team Relays in both Hamburg and Glasgow. Leonie Périault, another member of that victorious French team in Hamburg. Carlotta Missaglia promising young Italian athlete with a number wins as a junior athlete most recently in Zagreb.

The reigning World Long-Distance champion, Pablo Dapena González, who won silver only a couple of weeks ago at the ETU Challenge Long Distance Championships over the full distance. Jelle Geens, part of Belgium’s bronze medal-winning team in Glasgow. Jeanne Lehair reigning FISU World University Champion, winner in Valencia. Bronze medal-winner in Tartu and silver medal winner last weekend in Alanya, Roberto Sánchez Mantecón.

From the Netherlands, Kirsten Nuyes, winner of silver in Wuustwezel this year, a top ten in Cape Town and still only 21. Marten van Riel, bronze medal in Glasgow in both individual and relay, ranked 10th in the world. 6th place overall and 4th in the relays in Glasgow was Tamás Tóth.
