Caroline Kearney breaks the Dublin City Duathlon course record for the 3rd time in a row. Caroline who returned this week from racing with Monpellier in France was using this race as preparation for the Irish Sprint Triathlon Championships in Carrick-on-Suir on Sunday.
Conditions were not ideal for record times, it was quite windy and a little cool. This didn’t stop Caroline whose just seems to get faster and faster every time she gets on her new bike. The first run was at a quick pace, Anna Frankland and Nessa Smyth were the first home, Caroline was a little back in 4th but she had taken pole position again from Anna before the end of the 1st lap on the bike and continued on at the same pace to make a sizeable gap. Anna reeled in Caroline a bit on the run but it wasn’t enough to stop her winning her 3rd Dublin City Duathlon in a row, Anna came in about 30secs in 2nd place with Nessa Smyth in 3rd.

In the mens race, Brian Crinions course record remains intact but his clubmate Liam Dunne came close to it with some fast bike splits. From the gun Gary Crossan took the lead with Aubery Storey on his shoulder for the first km. These two created a gap for themselves from the following bunches but half way around the circuit Gary put his foot on the gas and got into transition area a few seconds ahead of Aubery who in turn was just ahead of Liam Dunne, Wes Murphy, Dave Corcoran and Peter Savage. Liam caught Gary on lap 1 of 5 of the bike leg and continued on at a blistering pace, creating a comfortable lead on the following group.
Liam got out on the 2nd run about 500m ahead of Wes Murphy who was soon caught by Peter Savage who in turn was caught by Gary Crossan. Tomás Kelly put in one of the fastest bikes of the night and a good run to get him up into 4th spot. Gary, the current Irish Marathon Champion had the fastest 2nd run and had Liam in his sights on the home stretch but the lead he had created from the bike was too much. Liam Dunne won, Gary Crossan second and Peter Savage who had travelled from Banbridge came in 3rd.

Again there was a record turnout, with about 170 people racing, many first-timers, and a lot travelled quite a ways to race. Apart from all the Dublin region clubs, their were athletes there from Midlands Tri, Carrick, Queens and HI-Elbow.  The next and final race in the series is on Weds, August 1st, same time, same place. Get your entry in now and get there early on the night.

‘Entries are now closed for individual competitors for the Mourne Olympian Triathlon at Castlewellan as we have reached our stated maximum for this year of 250 individuals. There are still some places available for relay teams and entries are still open for the youth duathlon. If you have been unable to get an entry but are coming along to support fellow club members please consider volunteering as a marshal. This is our first year to have closed roads and we will be under considerable scrutiny by various authorities.
More marshals = a safer, fairer race = a better day out for everyone.’

Gavin Noble wins ‘Bruce Sprint Triathlon’ in Scotland

Irish Elite Gavin Noble won the Bruce Sprint Triathlon in Fife, Scotland on Sunday 26th June. Gavin lead from the swim and won in 1:03:16, over 3 mins ahead of his nearest rival. He also smashed the previous course record by 2 mins, the record set in 2002, the year of the Manchester Commonwealth Games. Plus he was over 5 minutes faster over the same course than he was in 2002. All that and he says he only used it as training and cycled home after - 40miles and ran for an hour that night, nice warm down.

It shows he is getting back into good form. He’s had a virus lately which knocked him out of action for a few weeks. He still did the last Grand Prix in Beauvais in France for his club US Vendome, finishing 21st and helping his team into 5th spot. The week before he finished 12th in the Obernai International Tri, also in France.

Gavin is feeling fit and healthy again and should be in good form for the ITU World Cup race in Corner Brook, Canada on July 17th. He will be joined by other Irish Elites Caroline Kearney, Brian Campbell, Trevor Woods, Thomas Elliott and Thomas Simmons. All will be looking for important world ranking points.

Triathlon Chonamara - A Knockout Event

[image2_right]205 people have entered the Carna Triathlon already with 20 relay teams.
This Saturday the 2nd of July see’s the first running of the “Bog Race” in Carna, Co. Galway. The race start is 12:30pm from Ard Mor Strand which is situated about 5k from the start and finish area at Carna itself. Due to the situation where T1 and T2 are in seperate locations we are asking athletes to please show up early for the event.

Registration is on in the Óstán Chuan Charna from 9-11am. When athletes register they will be required to bring their bike gear down to the pier at Ard Mor where the Bike Transition is located, then they will return to the Hotel grounds to position their run gear in the Run Transition. The race briefing will be at 11:30. Athletes will then board a bus transfer down to the swim start in their swim gear. Kevin McBride, the Clones Colossus is to join in the fun at Triathlon Chonamara!

Boxing sensation Kevin McBride who has knocked Mike Tyson into retirement is coming to Connemara to lend his support to a worthy cause and participate in THE BOG RACE!

Triathlon Chonamara is to be held on Saturday July 2nd 2005 in aid of the Carna & Islands’ Lifeboat Fund. The Bog Race will get underway with a 750m Swim at The Golden Strand, Ardmore at 12.30pm SHARP! After the Swim there is a 40KM Cycle through the bog and wilds of Connemara, followed by an 8km Run.

These were Kevin’s words when he was asked to open Triathlon Chonamara.

Also lending their support to this great cause are local FF ministers Éamon Ó Cuív TD and Frank Fahey TD, who along with Kevin McBride and Superintendent Garda Tony O’ Dowd will officially start the BOG RACE with a BIG SPLASH!

TRIATHLON CHONAMARA will be a festival of activities and music for all the family for the entire weekend -  kicking off with a selection of young seannós dancers, including the Cunningham family, dancing to the best of Traditional Irish Music.

Fóidín Meara, a lively local band will also provide entertainment on the eve of the Triathlon.

A Celebrity Soccer Match will take place after the Triathlon on Saturday and the locals will have an oppurtunity to check out Kevin McBride’s fancy footwork!
