Triathlon in Soviet Union (USSR) goes back to the middle of eighties years. First triathlon competitions was held mainly in the Baltic Republics and in the Perm city (Ural region) also. USSR Triathlon Federation was founded in 1989. First Open Soviet National Championship was held in 1990 in Zelenogorsk (St. Petersburg subarbia). The winners - Aleksandr Nikulshin and Leila Lint.
In 1990 Soviet National Triathlon Team took part in the World Triathlon Championships in Orlando, USA first time.
Russian Triathlon Federation was founded in 1992. First Russian National Championship was held in Omsk (Western Siberia). The winner - Andrey Makushin (2d - Dmitry Gulyaev, 3d - Aleksandr Nikulshin). 12 July, 1992 Moscow host first gllobal international triathlon event - World Cup. Karet McCarthy (Ireland) and Isabellу Muoton (France) were first on the finish line.
In nowadays triathlon is developed in more than 30 Russia regions.
